Urban Landscapes

This study is part of the TU Delft research program 'Urban Landscapes'*.

Landscape architecture study of urban parks and city landscapes, entitled ‘Urban Landscapes’. This contains comparative studies of fifteen towns and cities and the Randstad. The landscape structure of every town and city is studied and drawn and an urban park of historic (prototypical) significance analysed, as a conceptual model for the changing relationship between city and landscape. The Chair then examines, through design-based research, how the Dutch Randstad might develop in the future from a landscape point of view.

Urban landscapes
Urban landscapes investigates the evolving urban landscape and it’s typologies, landscape architectural based urban development in the Netherlands and abroad, and the design of urban spaces, urban fabrics and urban regions within the framework of landscape architecture. The social, economic and technological development of society demands a fundamental reassessment of the design and the planning of our landscapes. In particular, the design of urban spaces, urban fabrics and urban regions is developing into major challenges both for the Dutch landscape and internationally. At the same time, landscape plays an increasingly important role in understanding and conceptualizing public spaces in compact urban environments. This domain investigates the formative elements behind this new urban landscape and the development of design methods and strategies, which can intervene and direct development of these landscape architectonic elements. In this approach landscape is seen as that which lies underneath, the site or substratum which is the point of departure for all urban design and planning.
