Observatoren - Mirror experiment

Competition entry Atelier HSL, a design for places left over after planning, 2003
Project team: Stephanie Holtappels / Eelco Dekker

This is an experiment with a large mirror. It imitates a tower. It is remarkable that the mirror shows itself totally different, as you would expect from a mirror. A mirror on someone’s wall reflects mostly other colours than the colour of the wall itself, it makes a contracts and becomes very visible. A mirror outside has a totally different appearance. Something that reflects outside will make the reflected surroundings as visible as the real surroundings in which you are positioned and is therefore not or hardly visible. The mirror wil dissolve in its surroundings. This works for sky and horizon. But sometimes the mirror stands up against it’s surrounding, for example at sunset when the sky behind the mirror is different in relation to the reflected sky.
